Three of the Schools have replied to me. Tuxford didn't apply for any funding as they already have a very full programme to help Yr 6 pupils transfer to secondary school. The other two (Portland and Retford Oaks) have applied funding and have sent me details of the Summer Schools they are planning (and both look very good).
I hope the other schools (Valley, Elizabethan & Selby Park) have just not responded to my e-mail. If they are not taking part in this scheme and they have no other help in place for their new pupils, then they have missed an opportunity and, come the autumn, some of their new students may be left playing catch up to more fortunate members of their school year
While there are some caveats about the criteria for funding are too narrowly drawn and that there are a number of children who could benefit from the extra help at a very difficult time but fall out of the two qualifying categories, this Liberal Democrat led Government initiative will go a long way to helping vulnerable pupils bridge the gap between being big fish in a small pond to being very small fish in a large lake.
