Health campaigners have welcomed the publication of plans for a £4 million hospital extension in Market Harborough.

The development at St Luke's site, in Market Harborough, will see improved services for patients and significant benefits to healthcare, say bosses.

Health activist Phil Knowles, who, for more than 20 years has been at the forefront of Harborough's hospital campaign, welcomed submission of the plans.

He said: "The design and space seems to demonstrate the provision of a good quality, well-spaced and well-accessed building. It is a substantial building which includes treatment and consultation rooms.

"The second and important part that we need to know is quite what services will be provided at this flagship development. Will they reflect the aspirations of the community, will they provide more? We wait to see."

The plans have been submitted for planning permission to Harborough District Council.

It is likely the scheme will be discussed later this year.

If approved, work could start next year and it could be open for patients in 2014.

As part of the scheme, the war memorial at the District Hospital, in Coventry Road, which will close as part of the modernisation, will be moved.

The East Leicestershire and Rutland Clinical Commissioning Group has now placed an order with a conservation architect to draw up plans for the re-siting of the war memorial, either to the Memorial Gardens or the St Luke's site.
